What would happen if someone took too much Robitussin and Tylenol together? I have a friend who was feeling upset and she took 25 pills of extra strength tylenol (500 mg each) and a lot of robitussin (over the recommended dosage). What is going to happen to her? I'm worried

martha replied: "You probably need to get her to a hospital. Seriously. Go find the neerest adult and tell them what happened. NOW"

Tonya replied: "Go to the hospital, I mean, that much acetaminophen (12,500 mg) can cause liver damage. That is serious!"

Miss B replied: "Immediately take them to hospital. She could have organ failure - especially liver is a concern when overdose on Tylenol. If Robitussin had acetaminophen then there is even more concern of organ failure."

loonychic replied: "take her to the hospital. too much tylenol will make it almost impossible to breath. people commit suicide by taking tylenol. i do not know about robitussin, but your friend is already in bad shape, take her to a hospital."

Is it OK to give Tylenol and Robitussin at the same time when cold? Sometimes my 4 year old son has fever, cough and nasal decongestion from cold. Always not sure to give him both medicine.. but had to.

augustgrl80 replied: "yes it is safe to do that, also with fevers you can alternate tylenol and motrin every 4 hours, since one is an aspirin and one is a pain reliever, just make sure you only give them the safe dose for their weight. My sister is a nurse so i call her everytime my kids are sick with something new, before i make an appt with a doctor. most times i dont need to make one common childrens otc meds usually clear them up."

heavenmattison replied: "it should be fine as long as there is no fever reducer in the cold med but you could call you dr and get the best answer"

Can you take Tylenol Cold Head Congestion the same time as Adult Robitussin NIght time? Tylenoal says dont mix with other medicines containing acetaminophen which i noticed robitussin does for the fever reducer. why is it bad and what are the effects?

Annie replied: "You can easily overdose on Tylenol. Your liver can only metabolize up to 4000 mg a day (that is 8 extra strength Tylenol). So that's why they say don't mix together. Does Robitussin Night Time contain Tylenol (acetaminophen)? If it does, just spread the two meds 4 hrs apart. Hope you feel better soon."

Is it OK to take Tylenol 3 with Codeine and Robitussin (the plain, decongestant one) within a few hours apart? Hello, my nose is a little blocked today, and I usually use Robitussin, the one with Guafenessin, to help with that. The problem is that I am taking Tylenol 3 with Codeine right now before I go to bed (at about 10:15 AM), and I do notknow if it'll be OK to take both of them, albeit a few hours apart from each other. Do you know?

sheila replied: "Yes it is fine."

jcann17_2002 replied: "I would say that it is ok. However, if you feel bad you should immediately contact poison control or the hospital. Over the counter Tylenol isn't very strong compared to the real stuff."

Justin R replied: "Depends on the dosing. Acet.. is a dangerous drug that can cause liver damage. The both (i beleive) contain it. You should never go higher than your doctors per ion. You sure cannot take them at the same time but 4 hrs apart will be okay."

W W D replied: "Guaifenesin is next to useless, so it's no big deal, but there is a pre ion Robitussin DAC that contains both a decongestant and codeine (used as a cough suppressant), so they're safe enough together."

Star Glazer replied: "Robitussin plain contains an expectorant. Robitussin CF contains an expectorant, anti-tussive, and decongestant. If your nose is blocked, then you need a decongestant. An expectorant will not do anything for nasal congestion. Sudafed-PE is a decongestant you can buy over the counter. Sudafed is a stronger decongestant that you can buy at a pharmacy counter only. Tylenol #3 has acetaminophen and codeine in it. It is not related to any decongestant. Therefore you can take them both together. However, decongestants tends to perk you up. Therefore it may keep you from falling asleep."

Is it possible tylenol and robitussin together could cause a high? Two nights ago, I had a horrible cough and a throbbing leg pain. I could not concentrate on anything the discomfort was so severe. Without second thought or question, I drank Robitussin for the cold, and took Tylenol for the pain (extra strength, 500mg). The dosages were both in the recommended range. Within minutes, though, I was feeling a bit too happy, disconnected, and exhausted. I suppose I would even go as far as 'loopy'. Confused, I looked a bit up on the medicines after the feelings had worn off - I wanted to know if it was possible to feel these things without overdosing. I learned about the DXM and acetaminophen that the medicines held. I still shrugged it off, though, and went to sleep much later that night. When I woke up in the morning all I could think about was taking those two things again. This scared me, a great deal. All I could ask myself was: "Could this be addiction?" So, my question to you all here at Y! answers is: is it possible to get a high-like (or drunken, rather) feeling off this combination of medicines without overdosing? Is it possible my body would just be sensitive to the DXM? I'd like any answerers possible.

Bigdada replied: "Tussin, yes, Tylenol, no. Robitussen contains DXM, whereas Tylenol has no narcotic ingredients, so if you felt high, chances are, unless you didn't do anything else that night, that you are just chemically sensitive to DXM."

Chief replied: "Medicines like this often have side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, drowsiness, etc, especially cold or cough remedies. That's why they contain warnings to not drive or operate heavy machinery and the like."

Obamas Shoes replied: "Robotussin can give you a buzz just by itself. You were prob out of it with the cough so you felt the effects more. I once drank a whole bottle of it with about 6 shots of Vodka when I had pneumonia and I don't remember much of the night. I never usually drink that much but I was coughing so bad I just kept alternating sips between the two. I was playing cards for money at the time and the next thing I knew I was waking up at home with my pockets full of cash. Luckily the people I was playing with drove me home."

michael r replied: "yes, and yes yes you can get high off of tuss by itself or in conjuntion with tylenol without overdosing, especially if you have a fever. yes you may be particularly sensitive to DXM, 1 in 4 are. Remember drugs are the piper, and you must always pay...they never give with out taking , like rumplestiltskin, they poison you, kill cells, cause your bodies defenses to activate, and trigger your brain's release of its own chemicals...all with consequences, so dont play with em!"

Can taking too much of a household medicine, like Tylenol, DayQuill, Robitussin, etc. be lethal? Could you also tell me approximately how long after the overdose the medicine(s) would kill you? Also, if none of the above names can kill when taken to much of, can you name some that are? I'm writing an essay... Thanks :]

Isabelle replied: "Absolutely it can. For example, taking more than 4000mg (8 500 mg tablets) of Tylenol a day can cause permanent liver damage and lead to overdose. Always take medicine as directed by a pharmacist or physician. All medications taken over the counter can be lethal if taken in to high of a dose. Water soluble vitamins, like vitamin C are very hard to overdose on, but it is possible."

Joseph the Second replied: "Yup. Too much of ANY Drug- can kill you... WHY do you think they bother to put those Warning Labels on the sides of the drug bottles & boxes ?! Read some- for your Essay. It'll help your Paper- & make YOU Smarter ! ;)"

Can I take tylenol 3 after taking Robitussin (30 mg Dextromethorphan)? The Robitussin that I took was Maximum Strength and has alcohol in it. I have a really bad cough from RSV and can't sleep. The tylenol 3 usually knocks me out, but I'm not sure if I should take it with the Robitussin. The only active ingredient on the Robitussin is Dextromethorphan HBr, USP 15mg in each 5mL. My 10 month old son just got out of the hospital with RSV and his Ped. said that what I had was most likely the same. I guess it doesn't affect adults the same - more like a really bad cough, low grade fever and sometimes bronchialitis.

amber_dawn_1986 replied: "I would say no, dont take them together, if im not mistaken robitussin has tylenol in it, and you would overdose yourself on tylenol, but this would be a great question to ask your doctor, even just ask your docs answering service they should be able to tell you your doctors opinion on this"

cwgrrl7 replied: "I don't really see the harm in taking them both, as long as you don't try to be productive or drive. If you do take them together, go to bed and stay there until the medications wear off. You have RSV? I find that hard to believe unless you are a 2 year old who can type really well..."

FLACA replied: "TRY IT LOL..SiKE..YOU WILL OVERDOSE"

Moey replied: "Yes you can. I give those two together at the hospital."

can i take tylenol pm pills and robitussin (liquid) together? i need to sleepp!!

Dark Angel replied: "Tylenol PM has Diphenhydramine (an antihistamine) in it. Tussin CF has phenylephrine (nasal decongestant). Antihistamine and decongestants have been known to have a synergizng effect when used together. That is, the two drugs, when used together, have an effect that is greater than the sum of the two. Robitussin D has pseudoephedrine in it and it will keep you up. If you are experiencing pain that is not accompanied by sleeplessness, then you should probably stick to regular tylenol. However, the use of the two drugs together should not hurt you too much. Just make sure that you give yourself 8 hours before you have to be anywhere the next morning as the two will make you drowsy."

When it comes to medicine, do you skimp for the generic brand or pay extra for the name brands? My mom always buys the Wal-Mart generic brand, Equate, for any medicine need. It bugs me because I feel like the generic brand doesn't have an affect on me once so ever. I'd buy the best, Tylenol, Robitussin, Vicks, Aleve, Advil, only the best.

ginnrc replied: "There are something that I can take the generic brand of but there are somethings I can't. For example, I cannot take an off brand of NiQuil because it does not work as good as the real thing. And when I have a cold and can't breathe I have to use Dristan because it's the only thing that doesn't irritate my nasal passages. There are something I can take the generic brand of and it works just as well."

denise replied: "Generic brand is the same and cheaper! You don't realize how they make drugs so cheap and then they raise the price of a name brand. If a drug doesn't help you, then maybe you need some other medication."

Jennifer L replied: "Depends. Most of the times the generic is fine. (I'm a label and active ingredient reader) but there are a few over the counter drugs that only the brand names work for me. Per ion drugs are similar. There are some generic drugs that work fine, but in others there is a difference between the generic and the brand names."

Ella L replied: "For a pharmacist to recommend a generic brand of a pre ion drug it has to be chemically exactly the same. No different mode of action, absorption, or effect. Exactly the same. The brand name ones are not better, they just advertise. The generic version is the same thing. It has to be. Often a doctor will write the pre ion for the generic version anyway. So the pharmacist automatically gives it to you. Ask a pharmacist if you are not sure, and they can explain more about the details of the law that covers this in your country."

Pangolin replied: "I'm a physician, and I buy only generics, unless there is no generic for what I need. All you're paying for is fancy packaging, advertising, and CEO salaries. The generic is the same stuff. Your body doesn't know what kind of package the drug came from. Any additional effects would be placebo effects from you thinking it's better."
